Erectile Dysfunction
Trouble getting or keeping an erection is often only of thought of as an embarrassing problem in the bedroom. For many men it is much more, erectile dysfunction can be an early indicator of heart disease or other problem. If something interferes with blood flow to the penis an erection may not happen. That interference is often atherosclerosis, the clogging of arteries that causes angina or chest pain, heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular conditions. Atherosclerosis is the buildup of plaque inside arteries. Plaque can obstruct blood flow through an artery.
Plaque buildup in coronary arteries may cause angina or a heart attack. In an artery to or in the brain, it can cause memory loss, dementia, or stroke. Atherosclerosis in arteries supplying the penis can prevent the increase in blood flow needed to start or sustain an erection. In point of fact, blood vessel problems are the main cause of erectile dysfunction. It can be said that erections act as an indicator for overall health in men, and reoccurring erectile dysfunction may be an early indicator of a problem in the heart or elsewhere.
Studies indicate early vascular disease leads to erectile dysfunction. The study also looked at men with multiple cardio vascular abnormalities including increased plaque and arterial rigidity and dysfunction, and found those men were 53% more likely to also experience erectile dysfunction. The study showed men with higher amounts of plaque in the arteries in the heart were more likely to develop erectile dysfunction than men with no plaque build-up. In addition to the incidence of erectile dysfunction associated with cardiovascular disease, men with plaque build- up in the carotid artery in the neck which supplies blood to the brain are more like to experience erectile dysfunction. Other contributing factors associated with erectile dysfunction include age, race, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, and obesity.
Simple lifestyle changes like losing weight, stopping smoking, or exercising more can treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction drugs may also be prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction.
